In her article on The Everygirl , Jaqueline Demarco stated in the 2000s Jaqueline had tried out many hairstyles going from straight, very curly, and wavy. None of them felt quite right for her, so she eventually embraced what works best: the bouncy, shiny ‘90s at-home blowout. A blowout is a professional styling technique that uses a blow dryer and brushes to dry, smooth, and shape wet hair into a desired style
One of the best parts of a ‘90s blowout is that there is no pressure to make every curl perfect or every strand pin-straight. Demarco notes that after sharing her blowout looks, she began to gain popularity on social media. She later spoke with NYC-based hairstylist and bridal specialist Lauren Baxter, who shared tips on how to master the at home blowout.

STEP 1: Get the right base
The products you use before the perfect blowout are very important. Start by using a moisture mask or a hair mask in the shower to make your hair healthy. Extra moisture is especially important for frizzy hair. After showering, gently squeeze excess water out of your hair using a towel until it is damp, not dripping wet. Next, apply a heat protectant such as TO112 Superior Blowout Mist to protect the hair and fight the humidity.Lauren Baxter also recommends using a smoothing serum to moisturize the hair and reduce frizz, helping achieve shine and smoothness.
Step 2: Let your hair air dry first
“Overdrying the hair is a huge mistake” states Lauren Baxter. Blow dryers can get very hot. and repeatedly going over the same sections can cause breakage.Drying hair when it is soaking wet can also lead to damage. Baxter recommends removing most of the moisture first and waiting until the hair is about 80–90% dry before using a round brush to smooth the hair and finish shaping the style. This reduces damage and allows the hairstyle to hold better without excessive heat
Step 3: Use the right tools
A round brush and blow dryer can create a blowout, but the style may not last long. To help the blowout hold its shape, tools like the Dyson Airwrap can be used. The Airwrap includes curling attachments that add body and movement, similar to what a traditional round brush would create, helping the blowout last longer. Even if the Dyson is too expensive, there are more affordable alternatives with similar features.
Step 4: Take the right approach
No matter which tools you use, proper sectioning is key to achieving a smooth and even blowout. Divide your hair into three main sections by drying the bottom third first, then the middle section, and finishing with the top section. Then split each section into left and right sides. Working in small sections helps create a smoother and longer-lasting blowout.
Step 5: Add finishing touches
The last step is to lock in the style and enhance shine.
To achieve a shiny, salon-like finish, apply a light hair oil after styling. Start at the ends of your hair and work your way up, using only a small amount to avoid weighing the hair down.
Personal review
I tried this at home blowout method myself, and overall it worked very well. Letting my hair air-dry before using heat made a noticeable difference in reducing frizz and damage. Sectioning my hair properly also helped the style look smoother and more professional. If I were to do it again, I would slightly less oil at the end, as too much can weigh the hair down. Overall, this method was effective and gave me a shiny, bouncy blowout that lasted the whole day.
