There comes a time every year when every October, people give out candy and wear costumes, when that day ends there comes a time where what holiday do you celebrate next. Some people state that it’s Thanksgiving yet a fair portion state that Christmas starts November first. Now why would some completely jump over the nationally recognized holiday?
In 1621 the American colonists celebrated the first Thanksgiving in Plymouth Massachusetts. That was the first recognized holiday to be celebrated in the new world, and it was always during the month of November. But it never had a set date for it so it was celebrated at different times by people. It wasn’t until 1863 when the 16th president of the United States of America Abraham Lincoln, made it a national holiday. In 1941, Congress made it the fourth Friday of November every year no matter the date, before that some business people who celebrated it did it sometime in early November to make the Christmas shopping season longer.
As the holiday season gets closer the fight between before or after Thanksgiving is always going to be there. Tension always grows between people on when they should start decorating, yet the fight is never between whether or not Christmas is good. It’s more should you wait for Thanksgiving to be over and start decorating after the last Thursday of the month.
If you stretch out a holiday too long before it actually happens you can get a thing called holiday fatigue. Holiday fatigue is a state where you are physically and emotionally exhausted from the stress of the holiday. This can be a problem with having more music and decor out and can make the holiday season more stressful than actually entertaining for people. They might feel this way because they just hear this for 1-2 months straight and they could get tired from it very quickly.
While some people like their early decorations like lights and inflatable Snowman, it can disrupt the connection between communities, because others might hate seeing them before December. While pushing communities to decorate sooner can be hard on families because of the cost or lights and electricity. If you get your lights professionally installed it can cost anywhere up to $6,000 plus the incredible increase of electricity that Lights cost then if you install them on your own you pose a risk of injuring yourself.
Holding out until December or at least after Thanksgiving can preserve the magic of Christmas. While it can make kids happier to have Christmas come sooner, it is better to make them wait so they can be more excited when it finally arrives for the small amount of time that it’s there and they can appreciate it more and value the time they have with family, friends, and loved ones. Doing this can also help parents and siblings have more time to relax before they have to do stuff like moving elves.
