Poker has many different rules depending how you play, hand value, and if wildcards are included. From the Masterclasses article on different types of poker it says that some types are: Badugi, Chinese poker, Indian poker, Omaha hold ’em, Pineapple poker. According to the origin of Texas Hold ‘em written by Jillian Becquet, Texas hold ‘em was Officially first played in Robstown, Texas in the early 1900s, and has evolved since the creation.
For this article we went around Timberlane Regional High School asking students and teachers what their strategies are to get a better understanding on how others play. First we contacted Mr. Woodworth. He said his aim to win is “patience” and adds “you likely aren’t going to win the game on your first hand.” Next we asked Eddie(Edward) Desmet on what his strategies were and he said “Call every bluff no matter how stupid it is because everyone is worse at lying than you are” and “Always go for a straight flush”
Texas hold ’em just like many other poker games players try to get flushes, straights, pairs, two pairs, full house, royal flush, and the three and four of a kind. Players are dealt two cards for their eyes only. The dealer will spread five cards. Three at once then one more and then one last one. Players place bets before and after each card is revealed.
To stay in, all players must have the same amount of chips/currency in the pot. Next, the blinds are usually two different types being small and big blind, the small blind is always half of the big blind divided up by two different chips, they continue to raise throughout the multiple rounds at the table. After all players have received their two cards betting starts. Betting is done counterclockwise around the table starting with the person clockwise from the big blind. The available actions a player can use are: fold, check, bet, call, and raise. The actions a player can use depend on what the previous person did. If nobody has placed a bet you can “check” which is when you don’t place a bet and the dealer deals either the flop, the turn,or the river, or place a bet. If a bet has already been placed you can “fold” in which you quit the round and no longer place bets, “Call” is when you match the amount betted by the previous person, and “raise” is when you match the previous person’s amount as well as increasing it. Any money put in can’t be taken out, once money is put into the pot it can’t be removed.
Before the first three cards are shown the “Pre-flop” happens. This is when every player can place a bet. Once all bets are placed and are equal then the “Flop” happens. The flop is when the first three cards are shown to the players. After they are shown players can increase their bets. The next part is “The Turn”or “Fourth street,” which reveals the 4th card. The last card shown is “The River”. Before and after the cards are shown, players will place bets. Once all cards have been shown “The showdown” happens. All players will place their final bets and players will show their cards one by one starting clockwise from where the button is. The player with the best hand wins the round and all money from the pot goes to them.
