Many schools have considered banning AI before. This is because AI provides real risks of learning new topics and skills while at school. Students are becoming more lazy and losing integrity. AI is used by students to write essays, complete assignments, and many more things.
According to researchers at Illinois University, the cost of AI can vary greatly within the education field. Systems that teachers use everyday just to make lesson plans can get up to $25 a month. Larger adaptive learning systems can be up to tens of thousands of dollars. This could be considered something ridiculous to add to a budget that is already getting cut down.
AI doesn’t just take away from money or learning, it can also take away from normal human interaction. “Relying more and more on AI may reduce the teacher-to-student interactions and relationships and take away from the social-emotional aspects of learning” according to researchers at Illinois University. When these interactions go down, students’ social skills will suffer especially in younger learning environments. Both teachers and students need to be able to consider their own social and emotional needs. AI is not a technology that just students can use. Teachers often use AI for tasks such as lesson planning, grading, and maintaining student schedules.
AI gives all citizens within school districts very powerful tools that can be of great use within the education system. But do all the negatives of AI outweigh the positives? Are parents okay with the use of AI in school? Parents have very mixed feelings about AI. About 71% of parents fear that AI could reduce their children’s critical thinking and imagination.
