Longtime Supreme Leader of Iran, Ali Khamenei, was killed on February 28th, 2026. A significant airstrike on a leadership compound in Tehran, carried out by the US and Israel caused Iran to sink into chaos and grief. Born the 19th of April in 1939, was an influential cleric. He came to power in the 90s and ruled Iran for over thirty years as a very controversial leader.
It was confirmed by Iranian officials that Khamenei perished along with other high ranking officials. Fears of a larger regional conflict were immediately raised by the attack.
Millions of people flocked to Iranian cities to pay tribute to the departed leader as the country’s government announced days of national mourning within hours. Khamenei was referred to as a martyr by Iranian state media, which also vowed to exact revenge for strikes. According to reports from Iran’s military forces they had started attacks on American and her allied targets throughout the region with missile and drone strikes, and governments in the Middle East increased their military alert levels out of concern that the situation might quickly turn into a wider conflict similar to the Persian Gulf War.
Following Khamenei’s death, the Assembly of Experts, Iran’s powerful clerical body, moved quickly behind closed doors to prevent a potential gap in their leadership. After deliberating, the council had chosen Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of the deceased leader, to step up to the position of Supreme Leader. Iranian residents thought that he was powerful behind the scenes of politics for a long time, but the meeting has put him in the difficult position of leading a wartime country. Reports from The Guardian also came out that said Mojtaba was hurt in the strike that killed his father, but he lived and was heavily guarded as he took the position.
The strike on Iran’s central leadership has sent shockwaves through world politics. And leaders around the world are stating that this could change the balance of power in the Middle East. Oil prices have sharply risen in America, military forces moved across the region, and diplomats are working hard to do what they can to stop this crisis from turning into a full blown war.
But for Iran right now it is to mourn their departed leader who set the country’s political and religious course for almost 40 years and figuring out how the Islamic Republic will respond to this terrible attack.
