An incedent in Porterville, California ended in tragedy last week when a man who fatally shot a sheriff’s deputy was killed after law enforcement drove an armored vehicle over him. According to Tulare County Sheriff Mike Boudreaux, deputies had arrived at the home of 60 year old Davis Morales to serve him an eviction notice when he opened fire, killing Detective Randy Hoppert, a Navy Veteran who had joined the force in 2020.
Deputies were attempting to serve Morales final eviction notice after Morales had failed to pay rent for over a month. Sheriff Boudreaux told AOL news that Morales had been “lain in wait” for officers and immediately began shooting as they approached. After the initial gunfire Morales barricaded himself in the home with a rifle, causing lockdowns and evacuations of nearby schools and houses. Authorities deployed gas into the residence, but Morales kept on firing for several hours, according to WPLG Local 10.
The whole situation ended at about 6PM when Morales left the home and moved through neighboring yards. Sheriff Boudreaux explained to US News that a Kern County SWAT team spotted Morales lying on the ground and firing at officers, in response the team drove an armored vehicle over him killing him instantly. Boudreaux reiceved some attention throughout the internet after stating in an interview “You shoot at cops, and we’re going to run you over,”.
Many Residents described the scene as unreal. Bystanders captured multiple videos of deputites taking cover while shots rang out. Multiple people expressed to AOL news that they were surprised that such violence happened in what was normally a quiet neighborhood. The death of Detective Hoppert deeply affected the community and the sherrifs department. “This is senseless,” Boudreaux told National Day Today during a press conference talking about the dangers officers face everyday even with something as simple as giving out an eviction notice.
