A Hawaii doctor has been found guilty after attacking his wife during a hike that was meant to celebrate her birthday, according to multiple news reports.
The incident occurred on March 24,2025, along the Pali Puka Trail on the island of Oahu. Authorities say Gerhardt Konig and his wife, Arielle Konig, were hiking where an argument escalated to violence.
According to court documents cited by ABC News , Gerhardt Konig attempted to push his wife off a cliff during an argument. When she resisted, prosecutors said he tried to inject her with a syringe and then struck her multiple times with a rock. Arielle later testified that she believed he was trying to kill her and that she had to fight for her life.
Nearby hikers heard her screams and intervened, stopping the attack before it could continue. Their actions likely prevented more serious injuries, officials said.
Investigators also revealed that the couple had been experiencing marital issues prior to the incident, reports from NBC News indicate that the tensions in the relationship had been building, although specific details were not fully disclosed during the trial.
During court proceedings, Gerhardt claimed he acted in self defense. However, the jury rejected that argument and instead found him guilty of attempted manslaughter rather than attempted murder. He now faces a sentence of up to 20 years in prison.
