Winter has long been the season for people to cozy up and enjoy some hot chocolate, but the reality is that winter isn’t all pleasant. Underneath the bright stars and the falling snow is a season of stress and exhaustion for so many people. With the snow cutting power out, making roads too slick to even drive on and you can’t even go outside without a couple of layers on.
Winter isn’t just bad, it’s been proven by scientific evidence that it’s a bad season. Shorter days make it harder to sleep and mess up people’s sleep patterns, and if you don’t wake up early enough you won’t get enough daily sunlight for the day. These changes have a huge effect on the human body and can affect you negatively. These changes are part of a Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) which is a form of seasonal depression people experience almost every year due to the winter season. Millions of Americans will experience what it is like to feel seasonal depression. According to Lamron, SAD roughly impacts about 5% of adults and lasts almost half a year, especially the northern states hit harder. The season of Winter drains the happiness out of people and makes people even sadder.
People try to ignore the seasonal depression. Winters always find a way to find a way to come back at you. Students and workers are affected every year and can be people affected the most with students because of waking up early for school and leaving school with no time to do anything after work or school because of the sun going down at 5 p.m. Winter doesn’t just wear your body down it also tears at your mind making the season physically and mentally draining.
Winter is also the time of year where people get the most sick. During the cold season air gets dryer weakening your nasal immunity and overcrowding in homes and buildings. Classrooms, offices, and homes become feeding grounds for viruses and bacteria because of the cold. As the Warrior Wire explains, winter sickness disrupts emotions, ruins vacations, and forces people to sleep at different times. Even when people try to not get sick, others around them tend to become sick, making it harder to get out of the house. `
People will say that winter is a wonderland. Often saying you can do so much in the winter time such as build a snowman, go skiing,make snow angels, and have snow ball fights. With snow comes slush, snow becomes hard as rock, ski slopes become icy, and the winter becomes too cold to go outside turning the once winter wonderland into a desolate waste land full of nothing but snow. Winter also brings more accident rates with the roads becoming too slick causing thousands of accidents every year. Winter brings nothing but misery for people. It has always been something good for a little but at the end of the day it becomes unnecessary.
In the end of the day winter is just the worst season to have with people losing energy to do anything, becoming more sick, the days becoming shorter so you can’t do anything, the winter becoming colder every day, and accidents are more prone in the winter time. Winter seems like one of the best seasons but it’s only an illusion for people. It’s much harder for people to realize that winter is just the worst.
