On November 29th, 2025, a two year old’s birthday party ended in tragedy after four people were shot and killed with many others injured. Over a hundred people were attending the birthday party and they were about to cut the cake when multiple armed men dressed in all black walked in and opened fire.
The shooter took the lives of four innocent relatives of the birthday girl. Journey Rose Reotutar Guerrero was one of the two eight year old cousins whose life was taken. She was described as curious and gentle, full of passion and dreams that she wanted to reach. Another cousin of the birthday girl, Maya Lupain, also passed away that day. She was also eight years old, just shy of turning nine on December 13th.
On her GoFundMe page, family members described her as, “the most outgoing 8-year-old you’d ever meet. Maya was the light in everyone’s life, the sweetest soul. She deserved a childhood full of laughter, school days, karate, family time, and dreams… not this.”
Among the victims was also Amari Peterson, an 8th grader who was known among his peers as athletic, smart and dedicated. He attended the birthday party with his parents and three siblings as family friends of the birthday girl. In an interview with Kimberly Weber on KCRA3, his mother, Kimberly Peterson said, “We were planning where he was going to go to high school, and now we’re here planning for a funeral. I just want my son back.”
The oldest of the victims was Susano Archuleta, a 21 year old visiting with his girlfriend. Not much information has been released about him, however, Susano’s father and stepmother told interviewers that “Susano rushed to protect some children and his girlfriend by getting them inside a closet to hide when the gunfire began.”
Although authorities have yet to release any information about the suspects, one man, Luciana Guerrero, was arrested, according to ABC7 news. He had 37 previous charges and was on parole when the shooting happened. His arrest was due to a parole violation and he now has no bail. The police continued their effortful search for the shooters, continuously looking for leads and evidence supporting the scene, but the shooters all had their faces covered during the attack.
The birthday party was held in a massive banquet hall filled with people, making identification of the shooter difficult. On Tuesday, December 2nd, San Joaquin County Sheriff Patrick Withrow provided an update on the shooting; “We are still processing the scene to find out direction of fire and all these other things that come into play in cases like this. Again, taking our time to get it exactly right and accurate.”
Unfortunately for the public, street culture and organized gangs have moved away from their past unspoken rules, such as no shooting in front of women and children. The community no longer cares for gun violence since it happens so often, people don’t see it as an abnormal event. Law enforcement aren’t the only ones to be taking gun violence seriously.
After this tragic event, Tastante McCoy fears that the community will just see it as another day of gang violence and will allow law enforcement to handle it themselves. The authorities should investigate and put the same amount of resources into every shooting, not giving extra for mass-shootings. McCoy argued, “because it’s the same scenario: children being hurt.” Others believe that gangs have boundaries and are beginning to push them because of social media’s impact. “Now beef on social media turns into a gun fight…What’s most alarming is that the beef and street violence has gotten to where we don’t even protect children,” says Leia Schenk in an interview with Abene Clayton from The Guardian.
