Through 14 weeks the New England Patriots are the 2 seed in the entire NFL. The Patriots started the season off slow going 1-2 with losses to the Las Vegas Raiders and the Pittsburgh Steelers. After that, they won 10 straight games but then lost to the Buffalo Bills in a close game.
It hasn’t just been casual brilliance, it’s been steady and constant. By beating the New York Jets by thirteen in mid November, the Patriots secured their first winning season since 2021. In December, after winning by over two scores against the Giants, they had 11 total wins and extended a franchise-longest active streak to 10 straight victories.
What’s behind this success? The biggest part has been Drake Maye. He shows a commanding performance as he is top 5 in the MVP race in just his 2nd season. Meanwhile, the defense tied the record for most games in a row without allowing 50 yards to a running back with 9 straight and the special teams is top in the league, with Marcus Jones returning kicks and punts.
Under first-year head coach Mike Vrabel, the Patriots appear unified and fundamentally sound. As Vrabel put it earlier this year, “a successful season is going to be one where the players believe in what we’re doing” (Patra 2025). That faith seems to be paying off.
The New England Patriots had 2 straight 4 win seasons in 2023 and 2024. They have now started 11-3 this season. The improvement shown this season creates excitement for many years to come. Things are looking great for the Patriots, as they start to look like the team that Tom Brady led in the 2000’s. Drake Maye is top 5 in passing yards and Christian Gonzalez has been top 5 at cornerback. “After two other solid returns, Jones’ career punt return average now sits at 14.6 yards per return, which is now officially the NFL record” (Heyen 2025). The balance of superstars, great players, and the possible coach of the year, have shaped this team into what it is today. The success of this team is not just from Drake Maye, it is from the entire team.
