Canada Post workers across Canada walked off the job in late September 2025 after contract talks with the government and Canada Post broke down. The strike, led by the Canadian Union of Postal Workers, began as a national shutdown and has now changed into rotation strikes happening in different cities.
The workers are fighting against proposed changes that would reduce door to door delivery, change delivery time, and possibly cut thousands of jobs. According to CUPW president Jan Simpson told the Supply Chain Drive “postal workers would much rather have new collective agreements and be delivering mail instead of taking strike action. Yet, we could not stand by as the Government announced its plans to allow Canada Post to gut our postal service and slash thousands of our jobs.”
Canada Post responded by warning customers that delays are expected. In a public statement to the news, the company said all service guarantees would be suspended during the rotating strikes and added, “ Reducing the size of the workforce through attrition will always be the first choice, but it cannot be the only option.”
While the union and Canada Post continue to talk, there is no agreement yet. Expressing support for what is going on outside our country. CNN states that “there will be a slowdown in economic activity, weakening consumer spending, and putting increased pressure on government finances if they keep cutting these jobs.
The strike has affected mail delivery nationwide and has pushed some Canadians to use private delivery services instead. Still, many support workers’ fight to protect good jobs and strong public services. The postal workers going on strike has affected day to day lives by delaying bills, bank statements, and government communications.
