Eric Sweeny, a 19 year old man, was sentenced to 60 years to life in prison for the murders of his sister in law and his two young nephews in August of 2022. Sweeny was 16 at the time of the crime and was living with his brother’s family for 3 years. CBS news shares new insight of the case, including how Sweeney initially was charged with first degree murder but pleaded guilty to second degree murder.
During the sentencing, the defense argued for a 40 year minimum sentence, focusing on how Sweeney’s challenging upbringing marked by abuse and exposure to drug abuse had impacted his behavior. The defense described his trauma as “immense” and pleaded for the courts mercy However prosecutors argued that crimes against children deserve the harshest penalties. Assistant Attorney General Bethany Durand emphasized the innocence of the victims, Benjamin, who was only 4, and Mason, 23 months, stating that their murders deserved separate sentences. The defense acknowledged Sweeney’s love for the victims and his struggle with the consequences of his actions, arguing that a life sentence without parole would violate the state Constitution. Eric Sweeny receives a 60 year to life sentence. Sweny wil be eligible for parole at the age of 68.
