On September 9th the president of the United States, Donald Trump, was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for the year of 2021 for helping broker a deal between Israel and the United Arab Emirates. Donald Trump, his reelection campaign, and his supporters mentioned the nominations as major accomplishments of pride.

The Nobel Peace Prize is one of the five prizes established and awarded annually to those who have done the most or best work for companionship between nations. It is also specified that the prize is awarded by a committee of five people chosen by the Norweigan Parliament, according to The Washington Post.

Christian Tybring-Gjedde, a member of the parliament of Norway made the nomination for President Trump. Tybring-Gjedde noted, “For his merit, I think he has done more trying to create peace between nations than most other Peace Prize nominees.” In his letter nominating Trump, he cited the importance of the agreement between Israel and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Also, he mentioned and credited Trump with playing a large role in easing contact between conflicting parties. Tybring-Gjedde stated that the agreement between UAE and Israel could be a game changer that will turn the Middle East into a place of cooperation and prosperity.

President Trump got nominated for the Peace Prize by negotiating the peace between the two countries. The new peace agreement, known as the Abraham Accord, promised to establish normal relations between the two countries. Previously, as claimed by the Emirati government, the accord immediatly stops Israel’s plan to annex the western part of UAE and gives them the opportunity to renew negotiations to end their conflict.  Tybring-Gjedde agreed and stated, “Indeed, Trump has broken a 39-year old streak of American Presidents either starting a war or bringing the United States into an international armed conflict.” Fox News then reported that the president has focused nonetheless on avoiding war and conflict with other nations so far during his term.

In the past, President Trump was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2018 for his efforts to get North and South Korea to reconcile. Previous winners of the award include Jimmy Carter, Nelson Mandela, and the United Nations, but Trump is not part of that list. Maybe he will be, but not yet. For the 2020 Nobel Peace Prize, there were 318 candidates. The Norweigan Nobel Committee doesn’t publicly comment on nominees, which are kept secret for 50 years according to BBC News. Many of these people have done everything possible to create composure and contentment between nations and keep international tranquility among us.
