Taylor Swift released her 12th album, The Life of a Showgirl, on October 3rd. Taylor Swift finished “The Eras Tour” in December 2024. According to Spotify, the album had 251 million streams on Spotify in the first day alone which is the second-highest debut in Spotify’s history.
This album wasn’t my favorite all together but had a few songs that I loved. I loved “The Fate of Ophelia,” “The Life of a Showgirl,” and “Opalite” the most. I am not a huge fan of any of the other songs in the album since they lacked meaning. I give this album three stars because those three songs I love were so good while the others weren’t very good. Critical reception was mixed as The Rolling Stone gave the album five stars while Pitchfork only gave it a 5.9/10.
The Life of a Showgirl was destined to be a hit on charts because it is from Taylor Swift. I believe that the album was good but the songs lacked meaning and just felt like words with a beat and rhythm. This album was a big change from The Tortured Poets Department that I, and many others, were not expecting.
Many of Taylor Swift’s past albums are about her love life while this one is about her life as a performer. Olivia Maglia, a junior at TRHS, said, “Overall the entire album and the entire meaning is so upbeat and refreshing to hear especially from Taylor Swift. You can tell in her life currently, especially after the Eras Tour and her engagement with Travis, that it’s also feeling more upbeat and it just reflects that in the music and overall I think the entire album is a 10 out of 10.”
The album has a wide range of songs with very different lyrical meanings. The most streamed song in the album is “The Fate of Ofeila.” Aria Labao, a junior at TRHS said, “The album was hit or miss. My favorite song is probably “The Fate of Ophelia” and my least favorite song was “CANCELLED!” Many other people love “The Fate of Ofelia” just like Aria which is why it was the #1 streamed song on all of Spotify the week the album was released.
Overall, The Life of a Showgirl appeared amazing since it took over the top streamed songs, but it hasn’t won over as many hearts as her past albums have. This album has many mixed opinions but more negative than positive. The song that seems to be a favorite is “The Fate of Ophelia,” it was the most streamed song the week the album was released and for a reason. The Life of a Showgirl is an okay album overall and looked like the perfect album when you look at the statistics but it lacked meaning and was not her best album.
