In a CTE class students learn much more than skills; They learn how to care for others. Health science is the foundation of the nursing classes that you can take your junior year leading up to senior year. Health science is also a very helpful course because even if you are not planning on going into the medical field it still teaches you valuable information.
Morgan Conte, who took teacher prep, stated, “Teaching is the better course because it gives you the skills on how to care for children.” This relates to Health sciences by its giving you the interaction skills that you need for future jobs in any career. The reason she chose this is because she has been inspired by past teachers. Most people do CTE because it may seem “fun” or “easy” but that’s not the case, CTE is meant to teach important life skills that will help students with their career in the future.
Hailey Hannaford is a student who took health science last year but is not continuing it now. In an interview Hailey explained, “ even though I am not doing CTE this year I learned how to properly care for others, as well as how the body functions.” Additionally she is glad she took this course last year because she learned helpful life skills and it is helping her in her current classes.
Out of all the CTE classes a student could choose, health science is the most beneficial when it comes to learning about people and their anatomy. This information will help students better understand how the body works.
After completing the Health Science course during junior year to move on you need at least an 80% by the end of the year. Seniors have three options that you can take: LNA, EMT, or allied. LNA is the course you can complete to get your licensed nursing assistant. To be able to get the LNA licence students will have to take rotations at Northeast Rehab they will need 60 hours of being with an instructor. After that 60 hours students qualify to be able to take the test that will then make them a certified LNA. The EMT course is an opportunity to get licensed to be an emergency medical technician. These students will have to take courses similar to the LNA then have to pass a test. Then allied is the course where the student can do internships and figure out the path they want to take.
To be able to sign up for these courses, during spring of sophomore year students have the opportunity to apply to any Salem CTE course. The decision comes back by the end of the sophomore year. Letting the counselors figure out the students schedule for their junior year.
