Previous Republican President of the United States, Donald J. Trump, sues left-wing news organization, Cable News Network Inc. (CNN), for defamation. He is seeking $475 million claiming slander from CNN after they called him a “racist” and “insurrectionist,” as well as relating him to Nazi leader, Adolf Hitler.

This 29-page lawsuit outlines numerous times where Trump feels as though CNN has used what he calls “Fake News” to spread false and harmful information about him.

On page 17 of the lawsuit, it says, “CNN’s highly defamatory and persistent association of the Plaintiff to Hitler and Hitler’s ‘Big Lie’ is no mistaken misappropriation. It is wanton and malicious ‘reporting’…” In this section, Mr. Trump and his legal team are accusing CNN of using false statements, such as relating the President to Hitler, to defame him, though the President has never claimed to follow Nazi ideals.

CNN’s use of the term “The Big Lie” is in reference to Trump claiming election fraud in the 2020 Presidential election. “CNN has singled out the Plaintiff as a purveyor of the ‘Big Lie’ while choosing not to challenge others who have suggested election infirmities.” This term was famously used to describe Nazi propaganda during WWII.

With this connection, CNN is accusing Trump of lying about election fraud, similar to how Adolf Hitler lied about those of the Jewish faith making the Germans lose WWI. So, it is clear to see how Trump feels as though their statements such as these are slanderous.

There is no denying that the 45th President has had many criticisms on a variety of topics. He did not hold back when speaking on sensitive topics during his Presidency, often using social media sources such as Twitter to display his opinions. Those who did not agree with a lot of what he was saying, often claimed that the President should not be allowed on social media.

In January of 2021, just after losing the 2020 Presidential election, Trump was permanently banned from using social media such as Twitter. This, along with other things, made the President speak out even more about his distaste for media sources, especially those promoting democratic ideals, such as CNN.

Though the extra $475 million may be nice, many reporters say Trump is only suing to make a point. He wants to tell all of the other left-wing journalists that making false statements about him to their audience will not be tolerated.

So, with a 29-page lawsuit on his back, as well as a very good legal team, Donald Trump might have what it takes to fight in a case against the news network.
