Bruins Hire New Head Coach Jim Montgomery

The Boston Bruins over the offseason have fired head coach Bruce Cassidy and have hired new head coach Jim Montgomery. Montgomery was hired after his contract expired as assistant coach for the St. Louis Blues. The 53 year old Jim Montgomery will be replacing former head coach Bruce Cassidy who has been the Bruins head coach for six seasons. 

He’s only been the head coach of 2 NHL teams, the Dallas Stars and Boston Bruins. He was coach for the stars in 2018 where he was able to lead them to the playoffs for first time since 2015. He was fired in 2019 by Jim Neill for unprofessional conduct and not organized with the main values of the team.                     

In January 2020, Jim made the announcement that he was in rehab for alcohol abuse.

In September 2020, Jim Montgomery was hired for the assistant coach position of the St Louis blues. His main responsibility of assistant coach was the special teams. He led St louis to the 10th place in penalty kill and second place on the power play the past two years he was with them. 

Montgomery was not always a hockey coach; he also played in the NHL between 1993 and 2003 between 6 teams. While playing in the league he scored 9 goals and had 34 points. 

Before getting a head coaching job in college hockey he was head coach of the United States Hockey League Dubuque Fighting Saints from the years 2010 to 2013. Assisting the club to league championships in the 2010-2011 season and the 2012-2013 season.

When he retired from Playing in the NHL He had some successful coaching careers in college hockey.  Montgomery was the head coach for the University of Denver for 4 years. In the 2016 and 2017 season he led them to a national championship. He was then voted coach of the year for 2016 2017. 

Jim will be the 29th head coach of the Original six Boston Bruins.
