Patriots Playoffs Hopes on the Rise

Charlotte, NC- Displays of true teamwork radiated throughout the walls of Bank of America Stadium this past Sunday as the New England Patriots squared off against the Carolina Panthers. Star rookie quarterback Mac Jones did not perform to fullest potential posting a season low 139 passing yards, 1 touchdown, 1 interception and 1 fumble lost. Throughout the first 8 weeks, Mac has been a key leader for the Patriots offense, and without this leadership somebody needed to step up and take the reins.

That’s exactly what the Patriots’ defense did. Led by 4th year cornerback JC Jackson, the defence strung together their best game of the season. Jackson snagged two of the three interceptions on the day, returning one for a touchdown. The unit also recorded one sack, while allowing only six points. His was by far their best stat line of the season, counteracting a slow day for the offense.

So, the real question: “Are they going to make the playoffs?” As a Pats fan, I surely see a lot of positives in this question. First, the team’s record does not showcase their true performances this year. For example, they outplayed the 6-2 cowboys until the end of the game, where a Pick-6 sent it to overtime where they could not stop the Cowboys. If the Pats continue to string together performances like the past few weeks, they will certainly up their hopes in making the playoffs.

Another big win, like the week 8 win against the Chargers could bring their hopes even higher. As of now, they are the 7th seed for the playoffs, which is definitely decent, but could easily be improved upon.

When asked the question “Are the Patriots going to make the playoffs?,” there were mixed reviews. Ethan Stewart says “No, they are not good enough this year,” while Dominic Pallaria claims “they can make the wild card game if they keep playing the way that they are playing.” Both boys are adamant Patriots fans, so only time will tell who’s prediction is correct.

As a fan also, I would love to see Mac Jones lead the Patriots to a playoff berth in his rookie year, and it looks as if he is going to do just that, but there’s always a slight chance that Ethan Stewart’s prediction of missing the playoffs for a second straight year is always possible.

Will Mac and the Patriots’ incredible teamwork lead toward a playoff berth or will they continue the streak of playoff-less seasons?
