Britney Spears is a celebrity almost many people in our society have heard about at one point or another, but she has been a very hot topic to most in today’s day and age. Although, her reason for the gain in popularity is due to a movement to get her removed from her conservatorship she is involved in with her father, Jamie Spears. The trending hashtag on social medias has been #FreeBritney, because this conservatorship  has been a very questionable topic for some time. Due to The New Yorker,  It’s been questioned over the years for exploiting, overworking and underpaying Britney. She was also held to strict rules and even lost custody of her kids which led to a fall in her mental state.  Overall, there are many things to address in this woman’s life, and hopefully the court will do her justice.

To start off, this conservatorship started in February of 2008 when Britney was 26. According to Rolling Stone, Spears started this conservatorship when she began to act out erratically in public. For example when she shaved her head and attacked her photographer’s car with  an umbrella in 2008. After the attack and multiple  other incidents she was hospitalized twice over the course of 2008 and was mentually evaluated multiple times. Afterwards, her father filed for the conservatorship that gave him control of her home and the assets she had. After calling it a “temporary conservatorship,” he extended it several times and according to Biography news Jamie stated, “We are deeply concerned about our daughter’s safety and vulnerability and we believe her life is presently at risk. There are conservatorship orders in place created to protect our daughter that are being blatantly disregarded. We ask only that the court’s orders be enforced so that a tragedy may be averted.” In this he is saying things that are true about her mental state, but he is not treating her as an adult and made the situation seem even more drastic than it already is. After these statements the court agreed to extend the conservatorship until the end of 2021. Biography news also stated that, a few months after, the end date was reevaluated and was determined to have no end date and was even allowed to last a lifetime. After this was made official things started to really get interesting and even more problems were created.

Britney spent years in this conservatorship with many issues regarding her mental health, career and personal relations with her family. The deal was extended until 2021, and once that time came around was when the public started acknowledging what is happening. Even Britney began fighting back and according to Biography news, she refused to perform while under the conservatorship with her father. Her lawyer stated, “My client has informed me that she is afraid of her father.” After hearing this, the judges did not remove Jamie but added Bessemer Trust as a co-conservator.

In April of 2021, Britney was still in the same position and finally asked to address the court directly. Another quote from Biography news reported she pleaded to the court and said, “I just want my life back…I’m not here to be anyone’s slave. I’m traumatized. I’m not happy. I can’t sleep. I’m so angry, I’m depressed and I cry every day.” After this statement this conservatorship seems to be a very questionable thing for Britney, and in result Bessemer Trust resigned as a co-conservator, as well as her court appointed lawyer. Britney did let that stop her though, and she hired her own lawyer to fight for her freedom. In July, according to Billboard News, The Bipartisan FREE Act was introduced. It stood for “Freedom and Right to Emancipate from Exploitation”. In the next couple months Britney kept fighting for her freedom and even requested to move her court date up but was denied. Finally, in 2021 Jamie Spears agreed to step down from the conservatorship until further notice. The following month he tried to end the arrangement and reinforce the conservatorship but was denied.

Today, Britney is in a much better situation than she was in then.  According to NPR, her conservatorship is temporarily being run by her accountant, John Zabel, and he will terminate completely once her assets are transferred back into her trust. When the decision was made, Britney was not present at the hearing, but once she heard the news she ran to twitter and posted, “ I think I’m gonna cry the rest of the day!! Best day ever.” stated by NPR. The singer was now free from the conservatorship she has been stuck in for the past 13 years, and she seems to have never been happier. Apart from the legal stance of it, Britney and her father still do have issues to work out, and their battle is far from over. Nonetheless, Britneys fight for her life is over and the captivating movement of #FreeBritney is now a thing of the past.
