Are you Really That Boring?

Ashlyn Lally

Have you ever experienced a time where you had to crack a joke to break the silence? Or maybe you’ve had to insert a comical quip into an extremely

boring conversation. If you have a rough time doing this, then maybe your sense of humor needs some reconstructing. Fortunately, there are endless tips and tricks to further your own character development.

According to Quartz, having a solid sense of humor is seen as proof of strength within yourself as a person. Don’t you want to be the funniest person in the room? When you’re overall a funnier person, people will tend to attach themselves to you. If you’re more of a boring person, or even if you just don’t like expressing yourself, many people will find you less desirable.

People who have experienced trauma will often use humor as a way to cope with their hardships. The US National Library of Medicine states that there is indeed a relationship between humor and your physiological well-being. Humor is usually accompanied with emotional responses as well as vocal expressions. Getting to make somebody laugh or smile will positively affect everybody you meet.

There are so many different ways and techniques that you can apply to your life in order to become a funnier person. First, try to get yourself in the habit of watching stand up comedies or humorous films. Once you get familiar with the surface of these strategies, you will start to notice yourself using recycled jokes from those places. Using other people’s jokes is not a bad thing at all, and it actually helps mend your personality into everything you want it to be, or everything you thought it already was.

Dave Chapelle said to his fans, “I’m cool with failing so long as I know that there are people around me that love me unconditionally.” There are also some other comedians who provide the world with top tier comedy and good laughs, such as Joe Rogan and Pete Davidson. They started off as average people who used jokes and witticism to become familiar faces by the public eye, and to be known for their top notch comedic skills.

Another way to increase your likeability is by being yourself. Try your best to not be a cookie cutter of the people you aspire to be. Even if you are just mirroring to fit in with everyone, people are way more drawn to traits such as uniqueness and transparency. Be honest with those around you, and try to give everybody a good laugh. If you aren’t being yourself, then who are you?

One huge let down of developing a sense of humor is when somebody doesn’t laugh at your jokes. Well, fortunately, that’s more than okay. “You won’t find everything funny because everyone has a different taste,”  according to Practical Psychology. This goes both ways, meaning that sometimes, not everybody will find your jokes funny either. This can be an extremely embarrassing moment for yourself, but it is a way to get out of a situation like this is to just make another joke.

Building your sense of humor can feel like an extreme challenge, but it’s really just a massive experiment on yourself. Whether you want to actually become a funnier person, or you just want to see how different you can change, putting in the effort will most definitely show. Watch some comedy, create some new jokes, and don’t be afraid to go out of your comfort zone. A little may go a long way, but is a little really ever enough?
