Are Disposable Cameras the New Thing?

Jordan Christian

Disposable cameras were created in 1986 and became a newer and easier way to document different moments in someone’s life. However, in the age of cell phones with an infinite amount of storage and instant photo generation, why are these making a comeback?

The rebirth of this late-80s gem comes from a trend from TikTok. Random people on the app will create videos showing the printed images of adventures they have undergone or random photos of their friends. This trend can be very nostalgic for some people who have used them in the past while on vacation or at home. The return of disposable cameras is very interesting, since you will never know what an image will look like until it has been printed. The images may be developed at a CVS or a Walmart, depending on what they provide.

This trend has gotten so popular that the Los Angeles Times wrote an article. Multiple people were cited in the article and mentioned the features they loved about a disposable camera. Justine Riddle, a reference in the Los Angeles Times article says she never leaves home without a camera. Riddle claims that disposable cameras “let you capture the imperfect in a seemingly perfect way with just one shot… I want to capture my friends in their most candid, spontaneous moments.”

From personal experience, these cameras are super easy and effective. They’re versatile anywhere: from under the water to a mountaintop. Each camera is about the same and has a number dial on it to remind you how much photo space is left in the camera.. It’s also safer to take with you if you were to go on a vacation, since your phone has a lot more value than the disposable cameras. Whether it’s a high-theft area, near harsh elements, or if you lose your phone, it’s safer to bring a disposable camera with you.

Disposable cameras are making a comeback, and it’s recommended that you buy one! Document your memories the old fashioned way.
