The Office And Why It Left Netflix

The Office: an iconic early 2000’s sitcom that started its fame in the UK in 2001 and landed in America as a brand new show in 2005. The Office changed television and comedy, serving viewers with dry humor and an experience many people can relate to: working a boring, yet eventful job. That is the beauty of the show. The Office’s style of being a fake documentary of employees working for Dunder Mifflin, a fictional paper company in Scranton, Pennsylvania changed television. The idea of having a terrible, yet hilarious boss, and having very unique coworkers, to say the least, resonated with a lot of people.

The american version of the sitcom started in 2005 and ended in 2013, with a total of 9 seasons, and had an audience rating of 4.9 out of 5 stars, 81% Rotten Tomatoes, an 8.9/10 on IMDb, and an 8.2/10 on the Rating Graph. You could say the show was a massive success. It first aired on NBC on March 24, 2005, and also aired and still is airing on Comedy Central. It also is available on FuboTV, Peacock, Youtube starting at $1.99 per episode, Amazon Prime at $2.99 per episode, and iTunes. As many of us know, it used to be on Netflix for quite some time, and according to The Chicago Tribune, they claim it was the most viewed show on Netflix, racking in over 45.8 billion minutes watched, almost doubling the minutes watched on the popular Netflix Original “Stranger Things” (that show is amazing too).

So why is it that Netflix removed their number one show? NBC owns all of the rights to The Office. “Oh how the turned tables…” as Michael Scott would say.

NBC took back The Office to be put onto their own streaming service, Peacock. And by joining Peacock for free, you can watch the first and second seasons of The Office for free. Peacock basic is free, and with the basic plan, you can stream daily news, sports, pop culture, kids shows and movies, thousands of hours of movies and tv, and many more with ads. Peacock Premium is $4.99 a month, and Peacock Premium Plus offers all of the perks of the premium plan, plus it’s all ad free and select titles and programs are available offline for $9.99 a month. To see more information about Peacock’s Premium Plans, visit their website at Peacocktv.com. And according to cnet.com, Peacock is available on multiple platforms.

You might be thinking: yes, that is great and all, but how do our fellow Office fans feel about the show leaving Netflix? What was Netflix’s response to this situation?

In a tweet from Netflix on June 25, 2019, they stated, “We’re sad that NBC has decided to take The Office back for its own streaming platform — but members can binge watch the show to their hearts’ content ad-free on Netflix until January 2021”. Hardcore fans of the show, including myself, are upset about The Office leaving Netflix as well.

I interviewed four seniors from Timberlane: Jess Higgins, Amber Farrell, Devon Simmons, and James Slipp, and I also interviewed Mr Woodworth and former owl, Ellie McCormick. Jess said “I’m really annoyed that they took it off, it was like the only show that I really liked to watch, and I rewatched it like five times. Jim was my favorite!”. James states that he was “Pretty sad about The Office leaving”. Amber said “It’s upsetting but also understandable”. Devon said “I’m pretty upset. I had watched that show like 30 times”, and Mr. Woodworth thought it was sad that The Office was leaving Netflix. Ellie feels that “it’s a scam. I’m sad because I would put it on all of the time, I would even put it on in the background”. Amber, James, and Jess agree that Jim Halpert was the best character, while Mr. Woodworth and Devon agreed on Creed Bratton being the best character.
