How to Make Cookies

Lauren Dumont

Since the beginning of time, food has been a reason to gather and spend time with others. Starting in the fourteenth century, cookies have been a favorite dessert across the world. According to whatscookingamerica.com, Cookies were first made in Iran in the seventh century. Shortly after the use of sugar became popular, cookies were made. The name cookie comes from the dutch word koekje which means “small or little cake”. Originally, bakers used cookies to test the oven by baking small amounts of cake batter before baking the entire cake.

According to Jessica Farthing, the writer behind eatthis.com, chocolate chip cookies are the most famous dessert in America. One of my favorite recipes is one that belongs to my Mémère. For as long as I can remember, my family has enjoyed following her chocolate chip cookie recipe while reminiscing about old memories they had with her. Every time we make these cookies they are always a hit.

The first step in making my Memere’s cookies is to let a stick of butter warm to room temperature. Depending on the temperature of the room this could take up to an hour.

The second step is to preheat the oven to 375 degrees and find a nonstick baking pan.

Third, combine your wet ingredients and sugar. Mix two thirds of a stick of butter, an egg, a half cup sugar, and one teaspoon vanilla extract.

In a separate bowl, combine the dry ingredients: one half cup brown sugar, one and a half cups of flour, one half teaspoon baking soda, and one half teaspoon salt.

Pour the dry ingredients slowly into the wet ingredients and mix until you have a dough-like consistency.

The last step is to fold in about a cup of chocolate chips.

Now that you have your cookie dough, be sure to taste it. It should be sweet and have a soft texture. This is the best part.

Then, roll the dough into small, golf ball sized pieces and gently place on the cookie sheet. Be sure to space your cookies apart so they do not melt together in the oven.

Let the cookies sit in the oven for about ten minutes and let them cool before tasting them.

Every time I make these cookies (which is a lot) they always disappear within a few days. According to my Dad, “these cookies always come out with a soft texture and keep their moistness. This has been a favorite recipe since I was a child.”

According to my friend Abbey, “They were really good and fresh-tasting. Impossible to only eat one.”

For as long as cookies have been around, families have enjoyed baking them. They are a quick and easy dessert to make. In America, chocolate chip cookies are the most popular dessert. With their minimal ingredients and quick bake time, it is not surprising that these have become a favorite.
