When I first walked through the doors of Timberlane Regional High School as a freshman, I was filled with nerves. The building seemed scary, the faces unfamiliar, and I wasn’t sure where I would fit in. I was scared of the upperclassmen, keeping up with classes, and adjusting to the new environment. However, what began as an anxious start turned into one of the most memorable and meaningful experiences of my life.
A big part of what made my freshman year so special, and the rest of my high school career, was the support and kindness of my teachers. Mrs. Guilmet, Mrs. Cerne, and Mr. Shivel stood out for their patience, encouragement, and genuine care for their students. They made learning enjoyable and always took the time to check in, making me feel seen and seen in the classroom. Their positive impact helped ease my nerves and boosted my confidence.
Outside of academics, I found joy in joining clubs and participating in sports, especially volleyball. Being part of a team allowed me to build strong friendships like my friend Ellie, and learn the importance of teamwork and perseverance. The school’s activities gave me a sense of belonging and helped shape who I am today. For example, the Project Hope Show was so impactful, and Best Buddies parties were filled with joy.
To the incoming underclassmen, my biggest piece of advice is simple: be kind. Smile at people in the hallway, even if you don’t know them. A small gesture can make a big difference in someone’s day. High school can be overwhelming at times, and we never truly know what others are going through. Kindness goes a long way.
Looking back, I’m so grateful I took the leap into Timberlane with an open mind. What started as fear turned into a journey full of growth, friendship, and unforgettable memories.
