At around 11 pm Saturday February 1st, The Dallas Mavericks decided to send NBA superstar Luka Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers for star Anthony Davis and a few complementary picks. NBA fans, sports analysts, and even Dončić were all blindsided and shocked by this move that Dallas made. Dončić stated he had no clue this was happening and he was “devastated” by the move.
Dončić, a 25 year old NBA superstar had plans to stay in Dallas his whole career. He even had just taken the Dallas Mavericks to the NBA finals for the first time since 2011. They received Anthony Davis, who is an NBA superstar as well, but he is at the tail end of his career as he is about to turn 32 years old. Everyone around the NBA is asking the same question, why did the Mavericks do this? Many sources from Dallas have shared that the Mavericks didn’t believe that Dončić was worth his supermax contract that he was available to receive after this season. Other reports shared that the Mavericks feared Dončić had conditioning issues and wasn’t controlling his weight very well. Analysts around the NBA are stating that this is in the top five of biggest trades in NBA history.
Students around Timberlane Regional High School have a unanimous opinion about this trade. The Mavericks made the biggest mistake in NBA history. Senior Andrew Pantano stated “Are we serious Dallas? The guy is averaging just about a 30 point triple double, took you to the championship last year, and is still 25 years old.” Only time will tell the consequences of this trade. Dončić is planning on continuing his success with Los Angeles, with high hopes of bringing a title to one of the most prominent NBA teams in history. Throughout Doncic’s first few Lakers games, he started off slow and then heated up with multiple 30 point games. The Lakers are second in the western conference and are looking to keep this positive stride going into the playoffs in a few months.
