On October 8th, mandatory evacuation alerts were sent out to many Floridians. While many people fled their homes, many animals were forgotten/ given up. Those evacuating had little time to pack all they could to safely evacuate their homes but animals can’t do the same. We worry very much about the safety of humans but what about the safety of animals. Many shelters and rescue teams were kind enough to plan out many different ways to safely help animals in harm.
While hurricane Milton was stirring, the Florida Urgent Rescue (FUR) was planning the evacuation for their animals. The FUC is a nonprofit organization that rescues animals from severe situations. The 26 animals evacuated from Florida were sent to Georgia where they will be held until they are sent to rescues in New York.
Best Friends is another organization that saved many animals from the hurricane. Here you can see all of the actions they have taken every day since October 7th when preparations started. This organization has also deployed 14 staff members to different shelters in Sarasota, Pasco and Pinellas county to help with the rescued animals. Though they can’t get them all, these organizations are getting a large amount of animals out of danger.
Do you want to help, but you’re unsure how? When disasters like this happen, many places offer adoption for shelter animals. The Humane society, ASPCA and the best friends animal society all work together to set this up. With shelters taking in many animals due to storms and other circumstances, these groups work to transfer animals from shelters that are overcrowded to areas with more room or want for animals. The weekend of October 11th, 65 animals were transported by ‘Wings of rescue’ from Florida.
