Many people within the community have heard of Timberlane’s popular club, Project Hope, it is a student-led organization at Timberlane Regional High School that raises money for breast cancer within the local community. The organization is very popular and students are committed to helping reach the end goal. At the end of the year, there is a huge event called Strut For A Cure. This event is a fashion show where students dress up as different categories and strut down the runway. This event brings in tons of families and friends affected by cancer or people who want to help us raise money for this disease. Over the 16 years that Project Hope has been doing this event, they have raised over 190,000 dollars as a whole.
A lot goes behind this event that the public may not even realize. Students in the Play For A Cure committee show their school spirit by going to sport events which are very popular at Timberlane. This goes on for a week in each season! These events are not just ordinary sports games. These games contain 50/50 raffle tickets, as well as a donation basket. Additionally, you can buy Project Hope merch including past year/current shirts, hoodies, and more! This helps raise money outside of the Strut For A Cure event year long. So far, there have been 5 Play For A Cure games. These include: Girls Volleyball, Girls Soccer, Boys Soccer, Field Hockey, and Football/Cheer.
The first Play For A Cure game was Girls Soccer on October 1st. The game ended in a tie 1-1 against a strong Concord team. The event was successful as $125 was raised in the 50/50 raffle. The next game was Boys Soccer on October 3rd. The boys played very well against a strong Bishop Guertin team ending in a 0-0 tie. Field Hockey played on October 4th, the team took a tough loss against a strong Winnacunnet team 0-5. However the team didn’t fully lose that day, as they received support from Project Hope members. The sport raised $126 from the 50/50 raffle. The fourth Play For A Cure game was Volleyball on October 9th who played second ranked Salem and battled hard but fell to a 0-3 loss. The game had a huge turnout with tons of students supporting in and out of Project Hope. $133 was raised at the game. The fall Play For A Cure week ended in the very popular football game on October 10th. The football team had the biggest turnout of them all, raising $154 from the raffle. The Owls sadly fell to a 0-28 loss against the second ranked team of Exeter. In total, the week was very successful, as Project Hope raised $579 to breast cancer and showed their support to our sport teams and community. There are two other Play For A Cure weeks that will occur in both the winter and spring and will only raise more money for the program to give back to the community struggling with this horrible disease of cancer.
