The Menendez brothers’ case is a case of very long duration. The case has been up in the air for almost 35 years now. Do Lyle and Erik deserve the sentencing that they have obtained? Did they really use self defense? Is the new Netflix series ‘Monsters’ an accurate depiction of the case? There are so many questions that need to be answered.
The creator of monsters states that the show was made to allow watchers to draw their own conclusions they make a statement “in actuality only four people know what happened that night and two of them are dead.” The director of the show mentions that they ask the audience to make their own decision as to what really happened because they are only going off of the facts that they could find through “research , theories, and court testimony.”
Along with the arguments of what really happened the viewers of the show are very occupied with if the show is even an accurate depiction of the brothers… The reporter for the brothers says that the show was not and in one scene made Erik and Lyle look as if they were “party-goers” when in reality “Erik was a mess.” Another falsely depicted part of the show was showing the brothers having “relations/incest” with each other. The scenes in the show that showed this was at the party when Lyle kissed Erik. And another time when the mom ‘Kitty’ had seen the boys showering together. None of this being true. This could make the morals of the boys seem more out of line than what their true intent of the murder was.
Overall the show did a great job of convincing the people that the brothers should not have gotten the sentencing they did. Most reviews of the show lead to the part that they were sexually abused and acted out of fear. Someone mentions that they feel as if they completely disregarded the fact that the brothers were sexually abused for years by their father in the case. The reviews range from 5 stars to some people wanting to even give the show 0 stars. The people wanting to give such low ratings of the show commonly feel as if they belong in jail and the show was a terrible depiction of the Menendez Brothers.
