On August 6th, Ukraine launched an offensive into the Kursk region of the Russian Federation, starting with air and artillery bombardment. The offensive, under the command of Ukrainian Military Commander Oleksandr Syrskyi, had managed to capture about 5km of Russian controlled territory by August 30th.
However, with additional reinforcements arriving to assist the Russian Federation Forces, members of the Russian Paramilitary group “Bear Brigade PMC,” the offensive began to turn in the Russian Federation’s favor when in September 6th, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky claimed that around sixty-thousand Russian troops had been deployed to the Kursk region., This number remains unconfirmed.
What is confirmed is that on September 10th, the Russian forces began a counter attack, with Russian Federation President Vladimir Putin reportedly ordering his forces to recapture the region by October 1st, 2024. With Russian Major General Apti Alaudinov of the 141st Motorized Regiment of the Russian National Guard, saying that they had recaptured about ten settlements in the region.
This counter offensive began as Ukraine, with limited manpower, was forced to redeploy troops from the Kursk region to fighting taking place near Pokrovsk. However, Russian military doctrines may hinder their continued advances, with Russian high command prioritizing infantry over field technologies for most of the war, where their adversaries have made a large degree of effort with limited resources to use what they have. Many may have seen videos of the use of drones, and with this most recent counter offensive. Their importance to the Ukrainian force has been expanded.
Reports that Russian air units managed to destroy pontoon bridges, constructed for the use of bringing supplies over the river of Steym River in the Korenevsky District. Leading to a possible logistical strain to easily bring supplies to soldiers fighting in the region of Kursk.
This comes as both sides continue to exchange prisoners of war, with almost over eight-hundred POW’s have been exchanged, with the most recent being September 14th with hundred and three of POWs were exchanged between both sides.
