Superstar rapper Kendrick Lamar announced via twitter that he will be performing at this year’s upcoming Super Bowl halftime show.
This isn’t Lamar’s first halftime show performance. In 2022, Lamar was in a joint performance with prominent hip hop artists including Eminem, Mary J. Blige, Snoop Dogg, 50 Cent and Dr. Dre. This performance had 112 million views and was listed in Rolling Stone magazine ranked as the fourth-best Super Bowl halftime show of all time. Lamar was a big hit in this performance, playing two of his most popular songs, “Alright” and “M.A.A.D City” as well as joining Eminem to sing “Forget about Dre”.
Over the years there have been lots of memorable halftime show performances. The website Billboard ranked the best performances and placed Prince’s 2007 performance in Miami Gardens, Florida, the best performance of all time. His strong guitar play and popular song selection had the whole crowd on their feet screaming and dancing.
Due to extreme popularity in the 2010s and 2020s, many other famous artists want to join Lamar in his upcoming performance. Lamar can’t bring out all of the guests, however, Billboard predicts Lil Wayne could be an option because the Superbowl is in his hometown and he has had high hopes in performing in the Superbowl one day. Another option could be SZA, who has a top hit of “All the stars” with Lamar and is a popular rapper at the moment. Billboard also predicted some songs Lamar could perform during his performance. Some of these include “HUMBLE” Lamar’s most streamed song of all time with over 1.5 billion streams, “Money Trees ft. Jay Rock”, “Goosebumps ft. Travis Scott”, and “Not like us”.
Kendrick Lamar grew a huge fan base when in 2012 he produced the album Good Kid, M.A.A.D City. This album won album of the year and sparked the beginning of a successful career. Kendrick Lamar has won 17 Grammy awards, some of these are Primetime Emmy award, One Brit Award, Four American music award, six billboard music awards, and 11 MTV video music awards.
This past spring, Kendrick Lamar and Drake both started making diss tracks directed at each other back and forth. It started when Lamar made a song saying he was the best rapper and that rappers Drake and J. Cole had left him out of recent collaborations. This drama stormed through the rap community and grew lots of publicity. It ended with Lamar’s hit single “Not Like Us”, which targeted Drake’s dating history and his branding company. Most people who listened to the diss tracks believe Kendrick songs were overall better, growing him even more fame. This was a perfect time to announce that Lamar will be performing in the Super Bowl. Even famous hip-hop artist 50-cent stated “As a solo artist right now, he’s the guy.” Super Bowl LIX will be played at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana. This show is highly anticipated and America is expecting a legendary performance that will be talked about for years to come.
