When you think about a police officer and their position, you would not imagine them to have a history of marijuana use. This might not set the standard that everyone expects.
Marcus Jones, a Montgomery County police chief, believes in easing the regulations on past marijuana users. The number of police officers have been decreasing, he believes this may be why law enforcement agencies have been struggling.
Recreational marijuana is legal in many states. Officers with marijana history will only be hired in these areas. Montgomery County asks that there is no marijuana use more than a year before recruit’s complete the police academy training. This allows them to decide to stop smoking weed right when they decide right when they try for the academy.
States that marijuana is legal in, it just makes sense to have these changes. Rejecting someone in training to become an officer for babbling once or twice isn’t much of a harm, it’s more when it’s excessive use of THC or alcohol, says the Montgomery County.
“People with a little bit of life experience can be more successful,” says the Fairfax County major, speaking on the department’s new marijuana rules.
