During the 2023 Grammy Awards, the Album of the Year was won by Harry Styles for his album Harry’s House. He also won Best Pop Vocal Album. Styles has won three Grammys in his career. The first Grammy he won was back in 2021 for Pop Solo Performance for his song Watermelon Sugar from the Fine Lines album. At the age of 29, he has received nine Grammy nominations, six of which were in 2023 according to Capitalfm.

When Styles won for Album of the Year he accepted the award with this speech, ”S**t. Man, I’ve been so, so inspired by every artist in this category with me. A lot of different times in my life, I listened to everyone in this category when I’m alone.I feel like on nights like tonight, there is no such thing as ‘best in music,’ I don’t think any of us sit in the studio making decisions based on what’s gonna get us one of these. This is really really kind … this doesn’t happen to people like me very often, and this is so nice, thank you very much.” 

For the 2023 category of Album of the year, he ran up against Adele’s ’30’, Coldplay’s ‘Music of the Spheres’, Lizzo’s ‘Special’ and Beyoncé’s ‘Renaissance’ ABBA’s ‘Voyage’, Bad Bunny’s ‘Un Verano Sin Ti’, Brandi Carlile’s ‘In These Silent Days’, Kendrick Lamar’s ‘Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers’ and Mary J. Blige’s ‘Good Morning Gorgeous (Deluxe)’ according to Capitalfm. 

After winning the Grammy he received a lot of backlash from the public. Motley because of the speech that he made to accept the award. He closed out the speech with this “I’m just so— This doesn’t happen to people like me very often and this is so, so nice. Thank you very much.” This made people call him white privileged according to movieweb.com. Everyone was attacking him saying that it was wrong of him to say as a white male considering that he was going against Beyonce who is a woman of color. A woman of color has not won since 1999.
