Most people know the song “Thrift Shop” by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis; it also features Wanz. If you do not know the song, go listen to it. The song was released in 2012 and is part of the album The Heist which is an alternative/ indie /hip hop /rap album. Everyone’s real question is does Macklemore really go thrift shopping or just sing about it? Macklemore wrote this song so you have to wonder why.

Macklemore has been interviewed by NPR.org on this topic before, and in short, yes he does. He states that, “You know, I love thrift shopping. It is something that has been a part of my life since I was a young kid and it’s outside of the box.” He likes to buy “bling”. He also likes to get rid of his clothes to donation centers and thrift stores instead of throwing them away. The back of his tour bus is filled with clothes he has thrifted. Ryan Lewis stated to NPR.org,  “ It is. The whole back area that we’re supposed to be working in is just a wardrobe at this point.”

He likes to write his songs about his life so they are different then other artists. Him and Lewis are a duo, however Macklemore writes the songs. It’s very unique that he writes about his life. He also told NPR.org that he wrote this song to talk about how he thrift shops and loves it. It was about a thrift shop in Seattle that has now closed down. It had reached number one on the Billboard hot 100 list when it had come out in 2012.The song also reached number one in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, France, Denmark, Netherlands, Australia, and New Zealand. They sold over 6 million copies of the song in just the US. They won 2 grammys on this song for best rap performance and best rap song. It has over 1.2 Billion views on Youtube as of September 2022.
