Upcoming Midterms Elections
September 26, 2022
The upcoming midterm is fast approaching, with a set date of Tuesday, November 8, 2022. Currently the House of Representatives is controlled by the Democratic party along with the Senate, both of these are very close and often flip-flop on certain topics.
Tuesday will oversee the election of all 435 seats in the House of Representative, along with 35 senate seats. It goes without saying that this election is going to be one of the most important midterms in recent years, with the potential to completely change the political climate of the United States. The Election will focus on core issues like healthcare, immigration, and the recent inflation.
New Hampshire for example, is capable of flipping the balance of the senate. Democratic Sen. Maggie Hassan is in a very contested race with five other republican runners, “a recent St. Anselm College poll found only 44% approval for Hassan compared to 51% disapproval, with only 39% of voters saying she deserved reelection”(UsNews). Depending on who wins the primary on Sep 13, 2022 will challenge Sen. Maggie Hassan, who has won reelection three times now and has cemented herself as a fierce competitor. Along with the senate seat two House of Representatives are up for grabs.
Current predictions from PoliticoForecast2022 has republicans taking the house but the senate still remains up in the air. This however, can change week to week until the midterm election.
If republicans take control of the senate it will make current president Joe Biden’s term even more grueling. On the other hand, if Democrats take a decisive victory in the senate, then president Joe Biden’s remaining time in office would likely be a breeze. However, it would be very beneficial for Republicans to take control of the senate for their 2024 dreams, AP Government teacher Mr. Kelly put it best, “This is the most important midterm election in a generation, if democrats remain in control, they will be able to move ahead with many programs they have been pushing for years, if not decades. On the other hand, republican leaders, if given a chance to gain the majority, would be able to set the foundation for their future agenda.”
Unfortunately, it is very hard to predict the outcome of the elections, especially being months out, but it goes without saying both parties would benefit enormously from this election. This is one of the most important midterms in recent years and unfortunately as it gears up, so will the pesky political ads.
