Top Video Games Currently

2022 has had plenty of successful games so far, and there are many more to come. But for now, let’s focus on the current top games of 2022. Elden Ring has taken the world by storm and is the newest title in the “Souls” series of games. Next up is an unexpected one, Wordle, owned by the New York Times, is trending all over America. Lastly, we have a double from The Pokémon Company in their newest titles, Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, and Pokémon Legends: Arceus. These four games are widely agreed upon as the top games right now, due to high sales, positive reviews, or high player count, and they are definitely all fun and interesting to play, even if some are not your style. 

Polygon reports that Elden Ring by FromSoftwareInc. is one of the top selling games in the world right now and is a very unique and interesting game. Similar to its predecessors, Dark Souls and Sekiro:Shadows Die Twice, Elden Ring is a game full of fantasy story telling, extremely tough bosses, and a full world to explore. “Elden Ring’s world is extremely vast, but despite spending all this time crunching through it for a review, I can’t wait to go back and see more of it unfurl.” says McKeand, writer for USAToday.  This game is perfect for those who are long time fans, or new ones starting off the series. Vulture.com states that Elden Ring is a game known for its difficulty, and that persistence is key, so gamers should stick with it and it will be worth it. The game is huge and extremely hard to grasp at first, but stick with it and the game becomes very fun and rewarding. That is the theme of all the Souls games, and that’s what makes the series boom in popularity every time a new one comes out.

An unexpected contender, Wordle is owned by the New York Times and is growing ever so popular. (Smithsonianmag.com) Wordle is a simple game on the internet, in which you have six tries to guess a five letter word. The game is one of the top games of 2022 currently, despite the simplicity (Polygon.com) The game is fun and easy to play on the go through your phone, and provides an easy time-killer. Wordle is fun for almost all ages, and really makes you think. The game feels extremely rewarding, however, and the pay off you feel after guessing the word is great, making you want more. (Smithsonianmag.com) An interesting game to see at the top, Wordle is very enjoyable and definitely worth trying.

Pokémon actually put out two games almost back-to-back this year. These games being the Sinnoh Region remakes, Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, and the new, open world game Pokémon Legends: Arceus. This was a huge surprise to many fans of the series as Legends: Arceus wasn’t expected until at least the Holiday season, but here we are. Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl are not technically new games, but they are actually remade versions of the old games from the DS era, Pokémon Diamond and Pearl. According to win.gg, this lets old players return to the Sinnoh Region (an in-game country-esque location) and experience the story all over again but with some new and exciting features. The art style has moved away from the old, 2D pixels of the DS games, and is now a cute, chibi art style in 3D on the Nintendo Switch. The game includes plenty of new features, such as the Grand Underground, and the fairy type being introduced to the Sinnoh region. (Win.gg) Pokémon Legends: Arceus is the first time Pokémon has really delved into the genre of open world games. Despite this, the game is massively successful in sales and fans are awaiting more. IGN reports that the game keeps the core mechanics of Pokémon while adding plenty of new things such as the catching system, move types, collectibles, and more.

Overall 2022 has been a great year for gaming, and there is much more to come. These top games are truly impressive as they managed to rise to the top while there are so many competing games out there. Gamers everywhere hope to see what else 2022 brings us, and we most definitely hope that everyone can enjoy something this year.
