Colby Covington Defeats Jorge Masvidal

Colby Covington defeated Jorge Masvidal at UFC 272 in a heated rivalry that has been going on for years between these two. This fight was on the radar for UFC fans for a while as we all wanted to know who was the better fighter. Covington ended up winning the fight by decision as it went all five rounds. It was a back and forth fight though with both guys having good moments in the fight. Even though Colby won this time, the rivalry is not over in Masvidals eyes.

Jorge and Colby in the start of their careers as teammates at American Top Team down in Florida. They were each other’s main training partners for their fights and they ended up becoming close friends because of this. They then moved in with each other in an apartment to split rent and save money. Colby and Jorge have videos of them together in the apartment building wrestling. They were the definition of best friends and were both rising in the welterweight division, Jorge more so than Colby though. This is when the friendship between Jorge and Colby changed for the worse.

Jorge Masvidal has been a staple of the sport for a long time and has always been a contender, but he never really broke through and made it to the top of his division. Jorge took some time away from the sport and as he did that, Colby Covington started putting together wins over guys like Mike Pyle, Max Griffin, and Bryan Barberena. All great wins, but not enough to really put him on the map. That was until he fought a big name in Damian Maia, in Maias home country of Brazil. Colby up until this fight was a quiet speaker as he wouldn’t really bad talk to other fighters but because of this he wasn’t getting attention from the fans. When he fought Damian Maia though he trash talked like you wouldn’t believe, calling Maias home country Brazil a “Dump” and just completely dismissing Brazil. Colby would go on to have a fake trash talking persona which did not sit well with Jorge Masvidal.

With Colbys new found trash talking persona, he got himself into big fights with real elite guys like Robbie Lawler, Tyron Woodley, and the current champion now Kamaru Usman. Colby made himself into a star, but then came the long awaited return of Jorge Masvidal. Jorge was scheduled to fight British striker Darren Till in Till’s hometown of Liverpool, England. After a long lay off that spanned years, Jorge knocked Till unconscious and announced his arrival back to the welterweight division. Jorge then was scheduled to fight the newly signed and heavily credentialed wrestler Ben Askren in Askrens debut in the UFC. Jorge knocked Askren out cold with a flying knee in five seconds in a fight where there was real bad blood between the two and everyone’s eyes were on them. It clocked in as the fastest knockout in UFC history. This was the key victory for Masvidal as it propelled him into main event fights with Nate Diaz, and Kamaru Usman twice. The only fight left to take place is Jorge vs Colby.

Jorge Masvidal and Colby fought at UFC 272 in the main event of a pay-per-view card. There was plenty of trash talk going into the fight and a lot of media surrounding the fact that they were former roommates and best friends, and now are bitter rivals who are gonna fight to see who is the better man. The fight itself was a very entertaining fight as both guys had their moments, but in the end Colby won by Unanimous Decision. Jorge dropped Colby in the middle rounds with a beautiful left hook and he had other good shots scattered in the fight, but Colby did what he does best and that’s putting a pace on people. Colby will hit you with a variety of strikes on the fight using all eight limbs, but he doesn’t throw with real power; it’s more about speed with Colby. Because of this, Colby does not usually knock people out, but he instead just constantly hits people and mixes in his wrestling and just drowns people over time, which is what he did to Masvidal. The first fight may be over, but the rivalry is definitely not over between these two warriors.
