After two years, one of Netflix’s most successful docuseries is back for a second season, this time with new athletes, a new team rivalry, and new controversy.

Season two of CHEER, a series following the Navarro College Cheer squad premiered on Netflix last month. The series focuses on the athlete’s journey to “making mat” and their preparation for the National Cheerleaders Association Collegiate championship in Daytona Beach, Florida.

Season Two is separated into two parts. The first half is surrounding the 2020 season that was cut short due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The second half then follows the 2021 season and the teams comeback after a whole year off the mat.

In part one, the viewers are introduced to some of the most valuable new teammates we have seen to date. Maddy Brum, Cassadee Dunlap, and Gillian Rupert are all incoming freshmen who worked tirelessly to earn their spots on the mat for the season. They all have some uphill battles they face throughout the season and the show covers how they reacted in those situations and what it took to achieve their goals. The first half also shows the team’s setbacks once COVID appeared and how they were affected.

The middle episode of the season covers the controversy surrounding one of the most beloved team members, Jerry Harris. Jerry was charged with child pornography sex charges and sexual misconduct in September of 2020. In episode five, Jerry’s victims speak out on their experiences and his former teammates share how they have been impacted since the news of Jerry’s arrest broke out.

The second half of the season starts the 2020-2021 season. The team is forced to begin their season without their fearless leader Monica Aldama, who was working on another project. With a new coach in place, and old team members leaving the squad, new rookie talents who have not stepped on the Daytona mat are forced to step up.

One thing that separates this season from last, is that a new team is also introduced into the series. Trinity Valley Community College, also out of Texas, is Navarro’s biggest competitor. The series now follows TVCC’s road to Daytona and what they will do in hopes to take down Navarro and gain the top spot.

Will Trinity Valley finally regain the title? Watch season one and season two now on Netflix to find out!
