The Cincinnati Bengals Worst to First

Griffin Roeger

The AFC championship was one for the books for the Cincinnati Bengals organization and their fans. They had a spectacular overtime win against the defending AFC champs, Kansas City Chiefs. But first let’s take a step back and see how far they have come to get to this point. In 2019 the Bengals were the worst team in football that season and earned themselves the number one draft pick in the 2020 draft. They wisely selected Joe Burrow who they planned to have as a franchise quarterback. In the 2019 season Burrow played for the LSU Tigers, and recorded one of the greatest quarterback seasons in college football history. He helped lead the Tigers to win a national championship, as well as winning the Heisman Trophy Award, and he set many touchdown and passing yard records not only at LSU but for college football history.

In Burrows rookie year for the Bengals he blew out his knee, tearing his ACL and MCL. This really hurt the bengals at the time but secretly was a blessing in disguise. This caused the Bengals to have yet another very bad season allowing them for another very high draft pick. This landed them LSU wide receiver Jamar Chase. Chase and Barrow had great chemistry in college which led to great chemistry in the NFL. Chase quickly became the top receiver for the Bengals and broke many rookie receiver records, as well as winning offensive rookie of the year.

The Bengals had a good season this year but nothing too crazy in the regular season. In the playoffs however, they were a different breed. They had two tough fought rounds of the postseason landing them in the AFC championship with the defending champs Kansas City Chiefs. This game was one for the books as it went into overtime and came down to the last play. The Bengals had a shot to win the super bowl for the first time ever. They faced off against a very good Los Angeles Rams team. Bengals defensive back Eli Apple was asked before the superbowl about their chances of taking home the superbowl win, and having to play against a very good Rams wide receiver group. “Just going to go out there and impose our will and play physical and let the chips fall where they may”. Regardless of the outcome this season will go down in history as one of the greatest seasons in Bengals history.
