On January 2nd, 2022 Twitter permanently banned United States House Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene from their platform. In a statement, Twitter said: “We permanently suspended the account you referenced (@mtgreene) for repeated violations of our Covid-19 misinformation policy.” It is worth noting that Greene still has access to her congressional twitter account (@RepMTG), which Twitter has appeared to not have banned as of January 10th. Although Twitter did not say what was tweeted to incite them to ban the Representative, Greene said in a statement that she was tweeting statistics from the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System,. Anyone can report an event into the system , but the agency says it is “not designed to determine if a vaccine caused a health problem,” according to NBC News.

Speaking further on her ban, Greene also stated, “Twitter is an enemy to America and can’t handle the truth”. She went on to say, “That’s fine, I’ll show America we don’t need them and it’s time to defeat our enemies.” Twitter implemented their strike system for violations in March of 2021.A  “permanent suspension,” is ordered after 5 strikes. This is according to Twitter’s website. Last year, Greene was given multiple strikes for election and vaccine misinformation before the ban earlier this month.

Aside from vaccines, she was also suspended for calling Georgia election officials “morons” for sending out absentee ballots during the 2021 Georgia Senate Runoffs. She claimed this was the cause for the Republican party to lose both Senate races in January of 2021, which has no factual evidence. Greene was also previously suspended for spreading other misinformation about vaccines in August 2021, including encouraging the FDA to not approve them because they were “failing” and did not reduce the spread of COVID 19.

Greene won her congressional race in Georgia’s 14th Congressional District in 2020. Prior to her time as a congresswoman, Greene was a Crossfit trainer and QAnon conspiracy theorist online. In 2021 during the first few months of her term, she was removed from her House Committee Assignments for comments she made in which she suggested that the 2018 Stoneman Douglas High School school shooting was staged. She has also made comments that have deemed as antisemetic, islamophobic, and generally misinformative. This recent suspension is not the first for Greene, seeing as how she’s been suspended or restriction on Twitter and other platforms previously.
