From Tom Brady leaving the Patriots to the Boston Bruins disappointing end to their season, what else could go wrong in 2020 for New England sports fans? With only two days left of the year, many were shocked to find that yet another sad story had to be told.

On Wednesday, December 30th, Zdeno Chara made a video post to his Instagram account along with a long message underneath. The video was titled, “Thank you, Boston.” From that alone, many fans already knew what they were about to read.

In his post, Chara wrote, “”My family and I have been so fortunate to call the great city of Boston our home for over 14 years. Recently, The Boston Bruins have informed me that they plan to move forward with their many younger and talented players and I respect their decision. Unfortunately, my time as the proud Captain of the Bruins has come to an end.”

If you thought this was the end of the bad news, I am very sorry to tell you that there is more to the story. Later that night, it was announced that Chara had signed a 1-year contract with the Washington Capitals. While many fans were shocked, many others were not surprised to see that a team already snatched him as a new player.

However, there is some good news to follow. Within the first week of 2021, the Boston Bruins had already announced that Patrice Bergeron would be taking over as Team Captain. Along with that, Brad Marchand was announced as the teams new Alternate Captain with David Krejci also keeping this title.

I had the privilege of sitting down with Charlie LeCain, Central Catholic Varsity Hockey Alumni and long time Bruins superfan, to ask him his thoughts on this change. He stated that, “I am definitely filled with sadness to see Chara leave. I have grown up watching him on the ice and have learned so much from him as a player that I will never forget. As sad as it is to say, I do think that he was starting to get older which could be seen on the ice. I just wish that he could have retired instead of going to another team. I agree with the Bruins in taking their team in a younger direction, but I do not think that Chara’s leadership skills will be able to be matched.”

The Boston Bruins first game of the year will be an away game on Thursday, January 14th, against the New Jersey Devils.
