New Supreme Court Justice
November 22, 2020
Following the tragic death of Supreme Court Justice, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the newest justice has been sworn in. On Monday, just a few days before election day, Judge Amy Coney Barrett was sworn in. She was voted into this position after a vote, the results were 52-48. With this new judge, the Supreme Court now holds a 6-3 conservative majority. Although there have been many events held to celebrate the new justice, she also holds many controversial opinions. Some being her opinions on abortions, the nations health care law, and the Affordable Care Act. This is part of the reason why all democrats in the house voted against her getting this position.
Seeing as Justice Amy Coney Barrett is so controversial, it is imperative to understand some of her most popular opinions. Democrats rarely support the justice because of her stance on many issues. One of the most important being her disapproval of abortions, as BBC News shares. One example would be how after an Indiana case blocked the right for minors to have an abortion without notifying the parent, she voted to have the case re-heard, in hopes of changing the result. Another big topic is her opinions on health care. Although Amy has said she will “consider the opinions of both sides” , democrats have reason to believe that she will vote against the Affordable Health Care Act, because her late mentor, Justice Scalia did twice. She has followed his opinions on issues before and has even been quotes saying, “His judicial philosophy is mine too.” As CNN tells readers.
Although democrats have many negative things to say about the newly-appointed justice, republicans have welcomed her with open arms. Many people in support of Amy Coney Barrett have said how they appreciate the fact that all her choices will be independent and fai. She has vowed to by saying “The oath that I have solemnly taken tonight means at its core that I will do my job without any fear or favor and that I will do so independently of both the political branches and of my own preferences.” While this contradicts the views of democrats, who think she will be following her mentores opinions, republicans are hopeful that Barrett will be similar to President Trump. Members of The Heritage Foundation’s Young Leaders Programs have also called her a role model for young conservative women across the nation. They tell their audience how she works with such passion and defends her beliefs no matter the opinions of others. This is what many people want to teach their children, so to have a role model on the Supreme Court is a very positive thing for many. The Heritage Foundation widley shares this with their community.
It is very clear that, like anything in politics, everyone will have different opinions. Amy Coney Barrett is no different. Democrats seem to hate her, while republicans seem to love her. Now that she is officially our new justice, only time will tell to see how the nation adjusts with her new role in our society. Some issues that are predicted to be a big deal involving Barrett and her opinions are abortion laws, The Affordable Health Care Act, and Americas Health Care Laws.
