Has The NFL Finally Figured Out Mahomes?

Sean Hurley and Eric George

Since 2018,Patrick Mahomes has been considered one of the most talented quarterbacks of all time. In his first three starting seasons,he had two Super Bowl appearances and won the division one other time. He was rewarded for his efforts with a massive ten year 450 million dollar contract making him the highest paid player of all time. With a loaded team on offense, Mahomes was expected to be nothing less than great, but eight weeks into the 2022 NFL season the Chiefs are five and four and have one of the worst defenses in the league.

Patrick Mahomes had a horrible start this year. He has thrown 10 picks in nine weeks. Last year he only threw 8 interceptions all season. His completion percentage is only 66% this year, but we are only half way through the season. Last year he had a 65% completion percentage at the END of the season. It is  a shock, because usually the Kansas City Chiefs have one of the best passing offenses in the league with Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce and Tyreek Hill. This tandem makes defensive coordinators shake in their boots. This season has been very different. as of right now they’re 5 and 4 they haven’t played this bad since 2012 when they went 2-14.  The former NFL MVP and superbowl MVP is second in the league with 10 interceptions. He is sitting at 19th in passer rating and 16th in quarterback rating.

In a recent article about the Kansas City Chiefs they said the chiefs only have a 45 percent chance of making the playoffs. They also said that there is a 20% chance that

they will win the division giving them a first round bye. If they end up making it to the superbowl ,which is a 3% chance they are going to need Mahomes to step up and stop turning over the football. Mike Golic said on a recent NBC sports show that chiefs “ are turning the ball over more than they have it.”

Will Mahomes and the Chiefs step it up and throw together a playoff berth, or will this issue spiral out of control?  This season could make or break Mahomes legacy. He could go from a potential hall of famer to a one hit wonder like Joe flacco or Nick foles, only time will tell how this story ends for the Kansas City Chiefs.
