The annual Derry Turkey Trot is coming up faster than usual. Time seems to be speeding by and many people haven’t received much information on what’s happening this year. It has people wondering, what’s going to be different this year, are they even going to have it. The Derry Turkey Trot is a 5k road race held in none other than Derry itself! This race is around the Beaver Lake and brings a lot of spirit to the town. Most of the time people will dress up in costume to make the most of the experience. It’s a good cause and all the money raised goes to different organizations from around the area. They even collect canned goods to donate to the food pantries.

This year will look a little bit different due to the corona virus and having to follow CDC guidelines. The amount of runners is limited to about 500 people and of course like most other public events it will be mandatory to wear a mask. “In accordance with NH Governor Sununu’s Safer at Home Reopening Guidance for road races, face coverings will be required for this event in all areas, except when running along the course.” With that being said they still plan on giving out awards at the end of the race. Awards go to those with the fastest times and so the first male and first female to finish will receive the award. The Derry Turkey Trot is always a good way just to get out and exercise for a good cause and this year will be just another excuse to leave the house after being stuck in quarantine for so long. Another significant part of this event is that people of all ages can join in. It is a family event. Last year at the Turkey trot “Eddie Clements, 40, of Salem didn’t put his effort into a costume. Instead, he brought along his children, pushing them in a stroller for the 5K race around the lake. But near the finish line, he took Claire, 4, and Riley, 2, out of the stroller and had them run across the line themselves.”

The featured picture is Eddie and his two kids running the race close to the finish line where they would meet there mother who had finished before them. It’s awesome that even such young children can experience this fun event. Especially now the Derry Turkey trot will mean more to the young children who haven’t gotten to experience it yet.

Although the turkey trot around here is in Derry, there are many other options of where you could join. People who want to be a part of this tradition could also run the race in Surfside beach(SC), Myrtle beach(SC), Cartersville (GA), Kennesaw(GA), Fort Worth(TX), Anthem(AZ), Anderson(SC), Fort Walton beach(FL), East Providence(RI), Ozark(MO), Columbia(MD), and many other locations. People all around the US celebrate with this run which entails a great run and a great time for many people to get out and do something good for everyone else. They are able to raise a ton of money for the charities and have fun while they’re at it.
